Who you are -and how you are- will show up in how you work the material.
We were exploring who we become in our relationships and the roles we take upon ourselves. She chose the wire. It's a 2.5 meter-long length of wire so I offered pliers to make it shorter and easier to work with.
The pliers remained on the floor, by her side, unused.
She worked the entire length in silence for twenty minutes. Folding, bending, threading. A negotiation of surrender as the wire swung from one side to the other, eventually getting shorter with every loop and twist.
Straightness was knotted into a form complex with being and entangled in meaning.
Some words she shared about her piece:
'Seeing how it will go.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Seeing where it will take me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Patience.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Giving it a chance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Creating support for others.'
Already, something about who she becomes with ‘other’ becomes visible.
What do you think might show up in your artwork about who you are in relationship?
