Staying Grounded - Reducing harm to your system by inviting moments of stability to your body & senses

Our bodies are porous to what’s happening around us and the behaviours of others. And with the changes and movements these days, feeling unsettled can be expected. So here are some grounding methods I find myself using to reduce the impact on my nervous system. Check out my previous post for more tips.

The purpose of this list is not to overwhelm you with ‘shoulds’ and expectations. Choose what is helpful to you and your circumstances, and whatever feels safe and empowering to do at the moment.

PLEASE NOTE:
Body scanning & deep breathing is recommended only if you feel safe to be in your body. If not, please skip them and try other grounding methods that work with other senses.

This is a 3-part series, so make sure you check out the links to the other 2 resources: Staying True and Staying Connected.

TIP: You can save the images below and use these steps whenever you need.

Take a break from news & social media

Stay informed but reduce the overwhelm that emerges with anxious scrolling.

Mindfully drink a cup of hot something

Take time to pay attention to moments from preparing to sipping your drink.

Eat a meal with presence

Slow down to appreciate every mouthful of whatever you choose to eat.

Soothe with natural elements

Dig your hands in sand, or rub a soft pebble in your palms.

Ground your feet

Standing, walking or placing your bare feet on concrete, grass or soil.

Shift energy with textures

My go-to is clay & wire to release energy!

Balance with scents

Smell scents that balance you such as spices, essential oils, candles, fresh air.

Track your breathing

Bring your attention to your chest to track your breathing. Take 5 deep breaths.

Scan your body

Bring attention to various parts of your body, from your feet to your head. (I always notice tension in my jaw and posture!)

Listen to comforting music / sounds

Listen for whatever brings balance back to your body - relaxing, uplifting, refreshing, energizing or other.
